Working together as a collaborative group can be challenging at times. We all have our own opinions and we may be very passionate about them – and that’s a good thing. During class discussion, both physically in class and online, there may be times when one opinion is perceived as ‘louder’ or ‘more right’ than any other. This isn’t always the case and we want to be sure that all voices are honoured and that everybody has an opportunity to share their ideas, passions, and thoughts. Refer to my first post.

The True Strength in OUR Classroom Lies in the Collaboration of Learners, Not in the Knowledge of One Expert.

Today, we are going to work through an activity where you will express what it is you value when working collaboratively with others and combine those with other folks in the room. Together, we will craft our ‘Rules of Engagement’, if you will, that will guide our work and keep us on track in a respectful and practical way. Remember, a positive learning environment starts with us and we all play a part.

This is OUR learning space. I want to be sure that everyone feels comfortable and safe to share their ideas. We are learning together and learning is messy. Messy is where magic happens!

So….What do you value?

  1. Couldn’t agree more with the above comment, especially when it comes to respect. An understanding and respect for the opinions of the people around you is essential. Its important that you respect peoples opinions and aren’t rude, to make the environment more open to contribution and enjoyable.

  2. I value leadership, collaboration, respect, and trust. These are all essential skills to have when working in groups. Being able to collaborate with your peers allows everyone to voice their opinion which keeps the conversation going, respecting each other is key because group members will feel more inclined to join in and will feel included in the group. Trusting others is important because everyone will contribute to the work and you won’t feel as though you need to be in charge of everything. This makes it so that one person isn’t doing all the work while everyone else is just sitting around. However, leadership is important too. Sometimes, people in groups can feel lost and confused about where and how to start. Therefore, it is important for someone to take this role in order to help out their fellow classmates and guide them if need be. Overall, these skills come together and improve the classroom and learning environment for everyone!

  3. I value a work place where you can walk in and feel not like an outcast but as a family member. Like the above mentioned, show respect and understanding to other’s and other’s opinions, but most importantly, respect yourself as well because no idea is ever stupid. Don’t put yourself down or beat yourself up over it, at least you’re thinking about the subject/topic. That’s all I’m gonna say for now, otherwise I’m going to feel like I’m repeating what the others said.

  4. i value people who are honest, loyal, caring, thoughtful and kind because its hard to come by someone with all of these traits and to know that they will be there for you. i also value family and moments with both my family and friends because you never know when you are going to get a chance to to them again.

    • Thanks for posting. I so agree! Time with family and friends is so very important! Just this weekend I made it a point to be sure I took time for family. My wife and I took my ladies to the frog exhibit at Royal Botanical Gardens. Have you seen it? It’s absolutely awesome!

  5. There are many characteristics that I value in people. These include honesty, collaboration, creativity (outside the box thinking), hardworking, knowledge, determination and others. If someone is honest and trustworthy, you know you can rely on them. If they are collaborative as well, this gives you a huge advantage if you’re working in a group together. Creativity is great if you want to go beyond expectations and think of something that can pleasantly surprise the teacher. Determination is also something I value, as it shows that the person isn’t just going about life like everyone else, it shows that they aspire to go beyond where they currently are. Knowledge can be gathered from various resources, whether that’d be books, school, friends, family or the internet, and is one of the most important things in life as it will greatly simplify your journey through life.

  6. I value respect because respect is the foundation to all the other character traits such as trust, compassion, collaboration, etc.., I believe respect is the most important component for a successful learning environment where everyone feels safe, happy, and their opinions can be heard.

    • I agree that respect is important, but I personally disagree with the point that it’s the foundation of all other character traits. I do not have respect for anyone that doesn’t treat people with said characteristics like honesty, empathy, and a shred of self-discipline.

  7. I value trust, respect and honesty. you have to trust the people you are working with to be effective and help contribute something to the group. I value respect because if someone in the group or even yourself don’t feel respected, you won’t be putting your greatest effort into the work because you may feel like no one listens or cares about your opinion, so why should it be shared? without the opinions of someone in the group, the end result might be something completely different. maybe that one person who felt disrespected didn’t share with everyone a key piece of information that would have opened new views on the topic for the rest of the group. finally, you need honesty because you don’t want a “yes man” in your group, you want someone who can contribute something meaningful to the group. something that is a truthful and original thought that could help steer the course of the conversation to new limits

  8. I value respect probably more than anything in a classroom setting. To truly develop trust, loyalty or anything along those lines, there needs to be respect. I don’t necessarily care if people like me or agree with me, I only care that people respect me and my opinions.

  9. One characteristic that I value is trust. I value trust in a person above all other characteristics because without trusting a person, it would not be possible to value their other characteristics. I value many other characteristics such as respect, teamwork, etc. but trust is one of the most important for people to work together as a group. Working together needs more than just trust to work though. Respect is also needed so everyone is treated equally and can be happy when working with others. Teamwork is needed so everyone is a part of the process and can easily work with others. These are some of the characteristics that I value when working in a group and these are absolutely needed for people to work together.

  10. My classmates have pretty much summed up everything I’d say. I value trust, respect, leadership, really everything on the chart our class created. The one thing I most value however is acceptance of each other, because how are we supposed to share our ideas and values if we aren’t even comfortable being ourselves around others?

  11. I value respect as well like my other classmates, mainly because without respect your classmates or people around you will not treat you the way you want to be treated or value what you have to say. I value an open-mind , because in group work you’re not always going to agree, so you have to be able to try and see from the other persons point of view. I also value humor because I don’t like being serious all the time , and if we couldn’t joke sometimes life would be really boring. I also agree with what @averstra7285 said about spending time with your friends and family, or just spending time with people who respect, care about you, and enjoy your company.

  12. I value the usual respect and trust as others, but one of my top requirements in a group/community is relevance and attention. As soon as someone starts getting off track or isn’t familiar with the subject, the end product can be impacted negatively.

  13. I value respect and people listening to eachother and giving good feedback as well as allowing everyone to add their ideas, even if some of the group disagrees. But, at the same time I value leadership because if one person takes a stand in the group it’s easier to get the work done. Sometimes a democracy isn’t the best way to go.
